Coates Wines, led by winemaker Duane Coates, is known for crafting refined, terroir-driven wines that seamlessly blend Old World elegance with New World vibrancy. ‘The Reserve’ Chardonnay is made from premium parcels of fruit sourced from the cooler Adelaide Hills region, which is ideal for producing complex, expressive Chardonnay. Coates' approach to Chardonnay is focused on balance and restraint, with minimal intervention, allowing the purity of the fruit and the characteristics of the vineyard to shine through. The 2021 vintage benefitted from a cool growing season, resulting in a wine with great freshness, finesse, and excellent aging potential.

Appearance: Pale gold with a bright, shimmering clarity, reflecting the wine’s youth and freshness.

Aroma: Elegant and layered, with aromas of white peach, lemon zest, and green apple, interwoven with subtle notes of toasted almonds, brioche, and wet stone. There’s a delicate floral element, alongside hints of vanilla and spice from the well-integrated oak aging.

Taste: Medium-bodied and beautifully balanced, the palate shows a lovely interplay between ripe stone fruits—peach, nectarine, and a hint of apricot—alongside citrus notes of lemon curd and lime. The acidity is bright and crisp, lifting the fruit and adding vibrancy, while a gentle creaminess from the malolactic fermentation adds texture and depth. The oak is subtle and well-integrated, contributing notes of toasted hazelnut, vanilla, and a touch of spice, without overpowering the fresh fruit.

Finish: Long and refined, with lingering notes of citrus, green apple, and a delicate minerality. The finish is clean and refreshing, with the wine’s bright acidity and fine structure promising further development with age.

Food Pairing: This elegant Chardonnay is an excellent match for pan-seared scallops with a lemon-butter sauce, where the wine’s acidity and citrus notes enhance the richness of the scallops. It would also pair beautifully with grilled chicken with herbs or a creamy risotto, balancing the dish’s richness with its bright, fresh character.
