Duane Coates made a decision in 2015 to produce two Chardonnays from the same block of his Adelaide Hills vineyard: The Chardonnay and The Reserve Chardonnay, which has longer oak ageing, a higher proportion of new oak and two pickings.

The later, second pick adds extra layers of fruit concentration and ripeness, which complements the taut acid and minerality from the first. There's a healthy time in oak, but this is not an oaky Chardonnay. It's full-bodied with an initial burst of lemon and white peach flavours, followed by savoury oak and hints of brioche and shortbread. If that sounds delicious, that's because it is! This is an exceptional wine, offering great value.

Awarded as a Master of Wine (MW) in 2020, Duane Coates is known for marrying Australian fruit with the complexity of Old World winemaking. He has a science degree, a winemaking degree and has worked throughout Australia and Europe, especially in Burgundy and the Rhône Valley. "Obsessive" is probably not an unfair word to describe him.

Rich, concentrated and powerful – yet refined and sophisticated – The Reserve will drink beautifully until 2030.

The 2021 Coates 'The Reserve' Chardonnay represents the pinnacle of South Australian winemaking, showcasing the meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail that Coates Wines is renowned for. This Chardonnay is a celebration of the varietal's potential in the region, capturing the essence of the unique terroir and the winery's commitment to producing wines of exceptional quality and character.

Tasting Note:

  • Appearance: Displays an alluring golden hue, indicative of a well-crafted Chardonnay.
  • Aroma: The nose is greeted with an intricate blend of ripe citrus fruits, green apple, and hints of tropical notes, complemented by subtle nuances of toasted oak and a whisper of vanilla.
  • Taste: On the palate, the wine offers multiple layers of flavors, from the bright citrus and apple to the richer tropical fruits, all beautifully integrated with the oak influences and a well-balanced acidity.
  • Finish: The finish is long and satisfying, leaving a delightful interplay of fruit and creamy oak.

Food Pairing:

  • Garlic Focaccia with Smoked Tomato Butter (Wineology): The creamy and fruity profile of the Chardonnay pairs excellently with the rich, smoky flavors of the focaccia.
  • Pulled Pork Croquettes with Manchego (Wineology): The wine's richness and subtle oak character complement the savory richness of the pork and the sharpness of the Manchego cheese.
