2021 Fumey-Chatelain 'Le Zouave' Chardonnay

Jura, located in eastern France, is renowned for its distinctive winemaking traditions and techniques, setting it apart from other French wine regions. The area is most famous for its unique "Vin Jaune" (Yellow Wine), made primarily from the Savagnin grape. This wine is produced using a process similar to sherry, where it's aged in barrels under a layer of yeast called "voile" for several years, leading to its characteristic nutty flavor and deep yellow color. Jura also produces traditional white wines from Chardonnay and Savagnin grapes, and red wines mainly from Poulsard, Trousseau, and Pinot Noir. The region's cool climate contributes to the high acidity and distinctive flavor profiles of its wines. Jura winemakers often embrace organic and biodynamic practices, emphasizing minimal intervention to reflect the terroir's true character.

The 2021 Fumey-Chatelain 'Le Zouave' Chardonnay is a distinct expression of the Jura region's unique winemaking style.  'Le Zouave' epitomizes the winery's commitment to showcasing the individuality of Jura Chardonnay.

Tasting Note:

  • Appearance: A bright, pale straw color that is visually enticing, hinting at the wine's freshness and vivacity.
  • Aroma: The nose is greeted with an intricate bouquet of green apple, lemon peel, and a notable nuttiness, characteristic of Jura Chardonnays, along with a hint of flinty minerality.
  • Taste: On the palate, the wine is a delightful interplay of crisp citrus and orchard fruit flavors, complemented by an underlying creamy texture and a distinctive mineral streak.
  • Finish: The finish is clean and lingering, with a refreshing acidity and a subtle, elegant nuttiness that is uniquely Jura.

Food Pairing:

  • Charred Broccolini with Stracciatella (Wineology): The wine's crisp acidity and citrus notes will harmonize with the charred flavors of the broccolini and the creamy stracciatella.
  • Tomato with Stracciatella and Aged Balsamic (Wineology): The freshness and mineral complexity of the Chardonnay beautifully complement the acidity of the tomato and the richness of the stracciatella.
