Gravner Ribolla Gialla 2015
Gravner, a pioneer of natural winemaking in Italy’s Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, is revered for his distinctive approach, particularly with the ancient Ribolla Gialla grape. The Gravner Ribolla Gialla 2015 continues his tradition of crafting deep, complex orange wines using traditional methods, including extended maceration in large clay amphorae. This hands-off, minimalist style, combined with biodynamic principles, results in a wine that beautifully reflects its terroir and the character of the Ribolla Gialla grape. The 2015 vintage is an intense, structured wine with remarkable aging potential.
Appearance: Deep amber or golden orange, a hallmark of the long maceration process, with a brilliant, slightly cloudy hue due to minimal filtration.
Aroma: The nose is deeply aromatic, with notes of dried apricot, orange peel, and quince, combined with complex earthy aromas of dried herbs, honey, and almond. Subtle oxidative tones, alongside hints of wildflowers, spices like saffron, and a mineral edge, add layers to its intriguing bouquet.
Taste: On the palate, this Ribolla Gialla is full-bodied and textured, with flavours of dried orange, ripe stone fruits like apricot, and quince. The wine’s extended skin contact gives it tannic structure, providing a gripping, almost tactile mouthfeel. Bright acidity balances the richness, while savoury, nutty undertones and a slight saltiness contribute depth and complexity.
Finish: The finish is long, persistent, and complex, with lingering notes of dried fruit, honey, and a slight saline minerality. The tannic structure and acidity indicate excellent aging potential.
Food pairing: This Ribolla Gialla pairs beautifully with rich, robust dishes such as roasted meats, pork belly, or game. It also complements mushroom-based dishes, aged cheeses, and Mediterranean fare featuring olive oil, garlic, and herbs. For an adventurous pairing, try it with Middle Eastern or North African dishes that incorporate aromatic spices and roasted vegetables, where the wine’s complexity enhances the depth of flavours in the food.
