Henschke’s 'The Wheelwright' Shiraz 2018 is a tribute to the 150th anniversary of the family’s first vineyards, named in honour of founder Johann Christian Henschke, who was a wheelwright by trade. Sourced from the family’s vineyards in the Eden Valley, this wine is crafted from old-vine Shiraz and reflects the cool-climate elegance and complexity of the region. The 2018 vintage, with near-perfect growing conditions, has produced a wine of great depth, structure, and finesse.

Appearance: Deep ruby red with a vibrant purple hue, indicating its intensity and youthful vibrancy.

Aroma: The nose is complex and alluring, with ripe aromas of blackberry, black cherry, and dark plum, layered with savoury notes of black pepper, dried herbs, and a hint of graphite. There are also subtle earthy nuances, along with oak-derived hints of vanilla, cedar, and spice, adding complexity to the bouquet.

Taste: On the palate, this Shiraz is medium to full-bodied, offering flavours of ripe blackberries, blueberries, and dark cherries, complemented by notes of spice, black pepper, and earthy undertones. The tannins are fine-grained and well-integrated, providing structure, while the wine’s fresh acidity keeps it lively and balanced. The oak is seamlessly woven in, adding a touch of vanilla, dark chocolate, and a creamy texture.

Finish: The finish is long and smooth, with lingering dark fruit, spice, and a touch of minerality, showcasing the wine’s elegance and aging potential.

Food pairing: This Shiraz pairs wonderfully with roasted lamb, grilled steak, or game meats, where its structure and depth complement the richness of the dish. It also pairs well with aged cheeses such as cheddar or Gouda, or mushroom-based dishes, which enhance the wine’s earthy and savoury notes.
