Taka K Pearson Estate Pinot Noir 2021
The Taka K Pearson Estate Pinot Noir 2021 is a stunning expression of cool-climate Pinot Noir from Central Otago, New Zealand. Crafted by winemaker Taka Koizumi, this wine highlights the region’s unique terroir and Taka’s focus on producing elegant, precise wines. Central Otago is known for its exceptional Pinot Noir, benefiting from a continental climate with hot days, cool nights, and soils rich in schist and gravel. These conditions allow for a long growing season, producing Pinot Noir with intense flavours, balanced acidity, and fine tannins.
The 2021 vintage was excellent, offering ideal conditions for the grapes to ripen slowly, developing depth and complexity while retaining freshness. The wine was fermented using natural yeasts and aged in French oak, a portion of which was new, adding subtle texture and complexity without overpowering the fruit.
Appearance: Bright ruby red with a translucent edge, showing clarity and vibrancy in the glass.
Aroma: The nose is aromatic and expressive, with red fruit aromas of cherry, raspberry, and cranberry, intertwined with floral notes of rose petals and a hint of wild herbs. There are also subtle undertones of spice, cedar, and a touch of earthy forest floor, adding complexity.
Taste: Medium-bodied with silky tannins and vibrant acidity. The palate showcases juicy red berry flavours, including cherry, pomegranate, and raspberry, alongside earthy undertones and hints of clove, cinnamon, and a touch of vanilla from the oak. The wine is well-balanced, with a fresh, lively character that is typical of cool-climate Pinot Noir.
Finish: Long and refined, with lingering notes of red fruit, soft spice, and a delicate mineral edge. The fine tannins and bright acidity promise excellent ageing potential.
Food Pairing: Taka K Pearson Estate Pinot Noir 2021 pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. It’s a perfect match for roast duck or game birds, where the wine’s acidity and red fruit complement the rich, savoury flavours of the meat. It also pairs well with grilled salmon or mushroom-based dishes like a wild mushroom tart, where the wine’s earthy notes and vibrant fruit enhance the umami depth of the dish. For a vegetarian option, try it with roasted root vegetables or a beetroot and goat cheese salad, allowing the wine’s freshness and complexity to shine.
