Yarra Yering Dry Red No. 1 2021
Yarra Yering Dry Red No. 1 2021 is a masterfully crafted Bordeaux-style blend from one of Australia’s most iconic wineries, Yarra Yering, located in Victoria’s Yarra Valley. Founded by Dr. Bailey Carrodus in 1969, Yarra Yering is renowned for producing complex, elegant wines with a focus on terroir. Dry Red No. 1 is a blend of classic Bordeaux varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. The 2021 vintage offers a beautiful expression of the Yarra Valley’s cool climate, delivering balance, structure, and ageing potential, while showcasing a harmonious integration of fruit, tannin, and acidity.
Appearance: Deep ruby red with a vibrant core, reflecting the wine’s youthful intensity and concentration.
Aroma: The nose is complex and layered, with aromas of blackcurrant, dark cherry, and plum, alongside classic Bordeaux notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, and pencil shavings. Hints of dried herbs, cassis, and subtle floral notes of violet add elegance, while a touch of mocha and vanilla come through from well-integrated oak ageing.
Taste: Medium to full-bodied, the palate is structured yet refined, with flavours of blackcurrant, dark plum, and red berries, balanced by firm, fine-grained tannins. The wine’s freshness comes from its bright acidity, which gives lift and precision to the rich fruit. Savoury notes of dried herbs, cedar, and a hint of spice, along with a subtle earthiness, provide layers of depth, while the oak influence adds texture without overpowering the fruit.
Finish: Long and elegant, with lingering dark fruit, savoury herbs, and a touch of cedar, leaving a clean, refined finish that promises further development with age.
Food Pairings: This Bordeaux-style blend pairs beautifully with grilled lamb or beef, where its structure and tannins complement the richness of the meat. It also works well with mushroom-based dishes or aged hard cheeses, highlighting the wine’s savoury and earthy elements.
