Château Montelena, renowned for its historic triumph at the 1976 Judgement of Paris, is celebrated not only for its iconic Chardonnay but also for its meticulously crafted Zinfandel. Located in Calistoga, at the northern end of Napa Valley, the estate benefits from volcanic soils and cooler microclimates, producing a Zinfandel that is complex, balanced, and refined. Unlike the jammy, overly ripe styles sometimes associated with Zinfandel, Château Montelena’s approach favours elegance and structure, highlighting the grape’s potential for depth and nuance.

The 2019 vintage experienced near-perfect conditions, with mild temperatures allowing for gradual ripening, resulting in a Zinfandel with vibrant acidity, refined tannins, and layered flavours. Château Montelena’s volcanic soils add a distinctive minerality, setting their Zinfandel apart from more fruit-forward expressions.

Appearance: Deep ruby with a vibrant purple hue, indicating its youth and concentration.

Aroma: Expressive aromas of ripe blackberry, raspberry, and dark cherry, intertwined with notes of black pepper, bramble, and a touch of dried herbs. Subtle oak influence brings hints of vanilla, cocoa, and a slight smokiness.

Taste: Medium to full-bodied, with rich flavours of dark berries—blackberry, raspberry, and plum—alongside spice notes of black pepper and cinnamon. There’s an underlying earthiness, with a touch of leather and minerality, reflecting the volcanic soils. The acidity is bright and well-balanced, giving the wine a freshness that elevates the ripe fruit, while the tannins are fine-grained and smooth, adding structure without heaviness.

Finish: Long and refined, with lingering notes of dark fruit, black pepper, and a hint of sweet spice. The finish is smooth and balanced, with a clean, mineral-driven aftertaste that invites another sip.

Food Pairing: This Zinfandel pairs wonderfully with slow-cooked beef brisket or barbecued ribs, where the wine’s spice and acidity balance the richness of the meat.
