Conterno Fantino, one of Piedmont’s most esteemed producers, crafts exceptional Barolos that masterfully combine tradition with modern elegance. Based in Monforte d'Alba, their focus is on expressing the unique terroirs of Barolo through organic practices and precision winemaking. Barolo Mosconi Vigna Ped comes from the prestigious Mosconi cru, known for its south-facing vineyards and clay-limestone soils, which produce Barolos with intense structure, power, and ageability. The 2018 vintage, cooler than previous years, yielded wines with fresh acidity, refined tannins, and an emphasis on elegance over raw power.

Appearance: Deep garnet with rich ruby tones and slight orange highlights at the rim, indicating youth and potential for aging.

Aroma: Highly expressive and layered, with intense aromas of black cherry, plum, and dried rose petals. Earthy undertones of leather, tobacco, and truffle intertwine with hints of liquorice, mint, and sweet spices like clove and cinnamon. The complexity of the nose deepens with time in the glass, revealing more of the Mosconi cru’s distinctive mineral character.

Taste: Full-bodied and powerful, with concentrated flavours of dark fruit like blackberry, cherry, and blackcurrant balanced by savoury notes of earth, leather, and dried herbs. The tannins are firm and robust, typical of Barolo from the Mosconi cru, yet finely structured, giving the wine a bold yet elegant texture. Fresh acidity provides lift and balance, complementing the wine’s rich fruit and adding a refreshing vibrancy. The oak aging is integrated smoothly, offering subtle notes of vanilla, tobacco, and spice.

Finish: Long and commanding, with persistent flavours of dark fruit, dried flowers, and earthy spice. The tannins and acidity give the finish a firm, structured backbone, promising many years of aging potential. As the wine evolves, notes of minerality and leather emerge, enhancing its complexity.

Food Pairing: This powerful Barolo pairs perfectly with braised lamb shank or slow-cooked venison, where the wine’s structure and tannins match the richness and depth of the meat. It also shines alongside truffle pasta or aged Parmigiano-Reggiano, where the wine’s earthy, savoury notes are enhanced by the dish’s umami flavours.
